Expressing self-portraiture through photography, videography, installation, and most recently sculpture; Sarah Cabbell works in topics of femininity, the body, and trauma to express her experiences as a young contemporary women. Being a self-portrait artist Sarah uses ambiguity and obstruction to demonstrate her distorted self-perception. With her photographic work, Sarah shoots in 4x5 film using a view camera, often set in her apartment with natural or ambient lighting. Sarah treats videography similarly, in the form of composition and a stagnant camera. She views videography an extension of her photography. Sarah’s installation shifts the ideas of self-portraiture by the representations of the internal and creates a sensory space where the viewer can interact. Sculpture also works in this way. Sculpting organic forms to stand in for the body while using ceramic and glazes, Sarah finishes her pieces with bodily tones.
